One of the biggest reasons that people don’t exercise is that they simply don’t like to. I’ve heard many excuses — from having no time to exercise is too expensive — but the reality is that if you really want to, you would find a way to get it done. The tricky thing is that most people don’t want/like to exercise because they don’t enjoy it. This is why it is important to find fun ways to exercise.
There are actual medical recommendations for how much activity persons of different ages and even genders should get daily, but most people don’t even get that minimum amount in. Here are some suggestions that can help you find an enjoyable form of exercise that suits you.
Work to music. From Dance Aerobics, to Spin, to Zumba and everything in between, there are hundreds of different exercise methods that incorporate music and rhythm into the workout. These are primarily focused on cardiovascular development, but some trainers simply put on music to accompany their weight-training or calisthenic classes.
Get in touch with nature. Go for a walk or a ride outdoors, or start regular hiking. Even large cities tend to have parks and other green spaces that allow you to escape the concrete jungle, even if only for a few miles. This can help you mentally relax while you burn a few calories.
Start/join an amateur sports league. Friday evening football (soccer) matches, weekend tag American football, bi-weekly tennis meets with friends — there are no shortage of competitive sports that can be taken down a notch or two to involve the not-so-professional among us where we can just enjoy the company of our friends, families or even co-workers.
Find an unorthodox training group. Number one on this list, of course, is a CrossFit box/gym, but it can also include people who do exercise trails, regular trail runs or extreme training (acrobatics, tyre flips, etc.). At the end of the day, it should give you something different from the regular gym routine.
Just find what moves you. Some people love to lift weights, some love to run, some love to dance and some love to swim. Try different things until you find the exercise method that you can call fun. Remember that what one person may hate, others may love and vice versa, so don’t avoid exercise because someone else says they don’t like it.
Through it all, if you are willing to try, almost everyone can find that one thing that combines fun and fitness. From there, changing your life will be easy and you should have no more need of excuses. Enjoy 🙂
